GUNDOGS at BUCCLEUCH ESTATES
In the 1830s the 5th Duke of Buccleuch was one of the first people in Britain to import Labrador Retrievers from Newfoundland in Canada to work as gun dogs on his Scottish estates.
The Buccleuch Kennel was established in the 1880s and the world famous Buccleuch Labrador strain was born.
Since 2003 with the appointment of Sporting Manager, Roy Green, and under the expert guidance of David Lisett, champion trainer, handler and breeder a year later, Buccleuch Gundogs have undergone an extensive facelift introducing Cocker and Springer Spaniels alongside the legendary Labrador. The kennel has gone from strength to strength winning many prestigious National and International championships.
Today, this historic bloodline forms the basis of the unique Buccleuch Gundog breeding initiative to help safeguard the future of this special breed, whose pedigree can be traced, unbroken, to the original Labrador. In addition, champion Springers and Cockers are now bred under the Buccleuch name.
With the creation of a bespoke Kennel in 2007 at Chapel Farm, near Thornhill, state-of-the-art training facilities are now fully functional, and for the first time the Buccleuch Labradors, along with the Cockers and Springers, are competing in field trials and bringing continual success to the Buccleuch name.
