River Nith opens for Season
The River Nith opened for the season on Wednesday 25th February with ceremonies taking place up and down the river. Provost Jack Groom launched the season for the Burgh anglers outside the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries with the customary offering of whisky to the river. Alex Saville, Chairman of the Burgh Anglers' Association attended along with Councillors Ronnie Nicolson and Bill Martin. Piper Calum Grierson gave the ceremony an air of festivity as local anglers looked on.
A similar ceremony took place at the Nith Bridge, near Thornhill, where local Mid Nithsdale Angling Association Chairman, Ronald Weir, toasted the river on the opening day of the season watched by many local and visiting rods, some of whom had travelled from Ireland. He wished them all a successful and enjoyable fishing season. The river was relatively low for the time of the year and not many anglers took the opportunity to be the first to catch that elusive spring salmon!
However, there is time yet. Who will catch the first salmon this year? back |
