SALMON & SEA TROUT on the RIVER NITHPrices, Terms & Conditions
From its source in South Ayrshire, the clear, powerful waters of the River Nith flow south through the scenic Nith Valley and on through the graceful beauty of the Queensberry Estate. From the rocky challenge of the Nith Linns to the more gentle, graveled beds of the Castle Beats, the Drumlanrig Castle Fishings offer approximately 7 miles of marvellous, exclusive fishing opportunities to the discerning fisherman. Only slightly differing in length, the beats are balanced for quality and are located within the policies of the pink sandstone Castle (the 'Pink Palace'), where the River Nith is at its most attractive.

Lower BeatMaximum rods - 3 Pools - 6 Bookings can be made using the Contact Form or online at Fish Nith.
The Lower Beat begins at the Nith Bridge at Thornhill, moving upstream through a series of 6 pools and glides to its boundary with the Middle Beat where the River Carron joins the Nith. The pools vary in depth from 3 ft at Virgin Pool through to Bullockholm which can reach a depth of 12 ft and is probably the best pool on the river. There are excellent fast flowing reaches and the Beat is best accessed from the east bank. Chest and thigh waders may be needed towards the back end of the season, although during the summer months thigh waders are sufficient. Double-handed rods are useful when the river is high. The river bed is gravel (with some occasional rock) and wading is not usually difficult. There is suitable vehicular access to the fishing hut, for which a key can be obtained from the Estate Office.

Middle BeatMaximum rods - 4 Pools - 8 Bookings can be made using the Contact Form or online through Fish Nith.
The Middle Beat begins where the Carron Water reaches the Nith and continues upstream for nearly 2 miles. Willowholm Pool is the deepest on the beat and is good for both fly and spinning. There is a good mix of pools and fast flowing reaches, with easier access for bank fishing opening on to the gravel bed. At Isla Holm Stream at the top end of the beat, there is a 150 yards stretch of excellent fly fishing. Thigh waders are sufficient during the summer months although chest waders may be necessary towards the back end of the season. Double-handed rods may also be helpful when the river is high. Vehicular access to the fishing hut is gained via the track to the ruined Tibbers Castle at Low Gardens and the key can be obtained from the Estate Office.

Upper BeatMaximum rods - 3 Pools - 6 Bookings can be made using the Contact Form or online through Fish Nith.
The Upper Beat offers a flatter gravel bed with more open bankings and not quite as deep as the other beats making wading easier. It runs from Dovecote Knowe Pool to just above Drumlanrig Bridge at Bell Pool where it conjoins with the more gorge-like terrain of the Nith Linns. Several of the pools are very deep (Bridge Pool can reach a depth of 15 ft and Mermaids Pool 8 ft). Again thigh waders should be more than suitable except at the back end of the season after considerable rain. Likewise, double-handed rods are useful when the river is high. Vehicular access is possible although this can be difficult when the ground is soft underfoot. However, the fishing hut is fairly close to the Estate road at Bught's Pool along which parking is available. A key for the hut can be obtained from the Estate Office. |
The Nith LinnsMaximum rods - 4 Pools - 8 Bookings can be made using the Contact Form or online at Fish Nith.
The Nith Linns run for 2 miles immediately above the Upper Beat and is mainly fished from the true left (east bank). Its many pools and streams provide good lies for Salmon and Sea Trout as well as Brown Trout. Although fly fishing is usually preferable, spinning and worming are also permitted at any height of water. The Nith Linns are rocky in nature with steep banks in places, access to the pools being by means of steps leading from parking areas on the A76. A fishing hut is available, the key for which can be obtained from the Estate Office. As well as day lets, a season ticket can also be purchased for this beat.
